Test environment

Hi all

I'm currently studying for the HP Cert - I have one test server that I can use in our machine room - We don't use NIS, NFS automount etc here - I would like to have a go at implementing the above along with creating my own dns domain before I take the test

I was offered a test server from one of our forumers ( george dodds)I asked the question about getting it onsite but Corporate rules dictate and state that I can't just get another server on site to use.

I may get away with a workstation though

Will I be able to set up a decent environment with a server and a workstation ?

What OS runs on workstations ? are they similar to servers with regard to LVM etc ?

Any other ideas that will aid will be great

Has any one got a second hand workstation or know where I can get one ?

Steven,

I've got a C160 that I use for testing.
You'll be able to load packages on the same way you can with servers.

I've got mine running bind, NIS, automounter, NFS, proxy to my ISP, ipfilter firewall.

You can get one from the unix nerd for cheap money. Take a look at http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/

Steven,

Sorry I forgot to sat that a C160 appears to be the same as a D170 and can run HPUX 11.00 and 11.11 is 64 bit.

Workstations need the workstation version of 10.20.

HPUX 11.00 onwards, the CD is the same for workstations and servers.

I install series 800 apps without a problem. It's probably not supported, but who cares it's not in a live environment.

In my opinion it you just want to setup a "test bed" with 1xserver and 1xworkstation; the server being NFS,NIS and DNS server then yeah I don't think it's a problem at all. If both boxes are in the same network subnet it's even going to make it easier to setup because things like NIS then does not need additional changes to the default configuration, the broadcast request will go through without glitch.
As far as OS is concern, it all depends on what are you installing; 11i(64bit),11.0(32/64bit) or 10.20(32bit). Just make sure if you're going for 64bit, your hardware supports it. Even though the server and workstation do not need to run the same OS, I would install the same OS on both, just to be consistent.
For LVM no changes as far as I know, not distinction between platform. Plain OS install will have the same LVM "flavor" on both the wkstn and server.
Processes (to answer yr question on ideas?) ..
a) Install and configure the server first (make it part of your existing NIS domain first)
b) Install and configure the wktn (make it part of your existing NIS domain first)
c) Now configure that server as a NIS server (different domain name) and DNS server.
d) Change wkstn configuration to point to the new server.
e) Implement automount (include automount maps in NIS) and enable NFS.
I'm assuming you have an existing NIS environment (thus a and b) otherwise a different approach is in order. Final question ..2nd hand wkstn. Try EBAY, we have been purchasing a lot of used wkstns from EBAY (B180, C classes and even L-class).

I want to keep everything away from our current environment as I will have to advise all what I am doing - if I link to current systems I will have to go through our change process which is a bit of a pain

Actually experience on workstation would definaltey be beeter than a normal server as you will also learm more about CDE env apart from the noraml LVM stuff . And ofcourse you have the full backing of the HP ITRC to help you sucedd in your targets.

I have built a test env at home with B class workstations acting as servers I run NIS and DNS , automount and a whole load of HP evaluation s/w which can be attained from :

one of the most sought after HP skill set in hpux now is service gurard and although unsupported will run a 700 series workstation.

I would also be careful to attain a w/s that does not have a serial number before the following listed ones as they do not support 100MB NIC.

I passed the HP Cert in January & I have to say that I hadn't used NIS or automount, but managed OK using the HP course notes & the HP Certified book.
It would have been nice to have a test system, but wasn't possible.

Can only offer telnet access to my lab at the moment, have been unable to get the web consoles to work properly over the web through the gateway.

Still working on solution, but have limited time to devote to this.

If anyone would like to help me with a project to offer access to a multiple server test lab over the web, then please let me know.

I got a C110 from ebay about 2 years ago for $500. I have not looked lately to see what is available. I would imagine C180 is not real expensive.

UX 11 runs on these machines and you can do just about anything that you have a license to run on them.

Just be sure and get 2 - 4 Gig drives or one 9 Gig and at least 256 Meg memory.
