topic K420 8port serial mux in Operating System - HP-UX

I have a MDP RS-232-C Full Modem 8 port mux that has been installed for a while and working. We recently tried to use ports other then the 3 we had been using and have been unable to do this.

1. Is there a program (simial to the e_mux program used for the eisa mux) on the system to see if the ports are operational and/or check the configureation.

2,Also when you look in the /tmp/vids dir you only see TTYA TTYB TTYC & TTYD linked to /dev/ttya /dev/ttyb /dev/ttyc /dev/ttyd respecitvely and these links are recreated at each reboot. is this typical or could another program be creating these links.

I suspect that you are trying to use ports 0,1, or 7 on the MDP; don't. Port 0 is actually the console; port 1 is the UPS port, and port 7 is the internal modem. I have never understood why these ports are left on the MDP. You can only use ports 2-6 for general purpose connections.

Out of the 8 ports, ports 0,1 & 7 are only for ..
0 console
1 UPS
7 internal modem
The rest of the ports are useable. I have not heard of "e_mux" and for /tmp/vids I suspect the links are created by specific program during system startup.

Also even thought port 0,1,7 are being used for these functions they still acts like a normal serial port , and have to be defined in /etc/inittab file . Ypou can safely use 0,1,7 for all other fucntions , we have modems working fine atleast on a port 7 of a K class server. It looks that you have problem on the se port , idelally to check that define a terminal on each of these and try conenctin the console or some dumb ternial to cehck the port is fien or not.

Manoj Srivastava
