hello i am an active duty sailor with the united states navy and i am having an issue with a computer upon initial boot up. some background informaton i am not an IT or super computer savy but have been given the task to learn about this console and get it up and running.

my issue is with a HP-VUE login this is the exact error i recive.

and the message continues to reteat i have no information in any of my tecnical documents for this password. other than this information here

i dont have acces to these documents. any help with this issue would be greatly appreceated.

How much don't you know about HP-UX (or any other UNIX-like) OS?

Who normally administers this stuff? And does anyone do any
house-keeping, or does it just run until it doesn't? Or are we trying
to resurrect an old/dead system? Does anyone know the "root" password?

Eh? Even if VUE were working, I'd expect a user name and password to
be needed to get logged in.

Disclaimer: I haven't used a system like this in some decades, and I
don't have a live one, so I'm working from memory.

Nice antique you have there. I would not bet on getting any help
from HP[E] itself, but one never knows. Some basic info:

HP VUE is the fancy user-interface (keyboard, mouse/pointer,
graphical display) which is built on the X Window System. If the X
server can't start for some reason, then the VUE overlay is doomed. Of
course, the first question would be "Why can't the X server be started?"

Did you? I'd expect that to give you a command-line log-in prompt,
which, given a valid user name and password, should let you get to a
shell prompt, where you could do some exploration. I'd also expect a
successful command-line log-in to pause the attempts to start VUE.

If you can get logged in, a command like the following might provide
a little basic info about your system and its OS:

uname -a

Knowing nothing, but trying to guess what could inhibit the X server,
I might look to see if I had one or more full storage (disk)
partitions. A command like "df" or "bdf" might help with that.

I might also try to find some system log files, which might offer
some clues. For example, "/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log". If such log
files are allowed to grow forever, then eventually the disk(s) will
fill, and that can cause problems of many types.

If no one knows a good user_name+password combination, there are
still things which can be done ("single-user mode"), but I'd need to do
some research to (try to) find out how to do that on an antique of that
vintage.

that sounds like a network configuration problem.

VUE is very picky about network problems. Try to connect the LAN

(RJ45) port to an etherrnet switch or use an Ethernet Transceiver

(HP 28685B) to the AUI port and login will probably work again.
