maximum number of group members in NIS group?

I have found it documented as an NIS standard/behavior that a single group definition line inside the NIS group map can be at most 1024 chars long. Even with 2 char user names that allow me less than 300 user IDs. Is there any way to have 1000, 8 character user names associated with a single group using NIS or NIS+?
