zsh does not echo backspace

Hi all,
I have recently upgraded to HP-UX 11.0.
I installed zsh 4.0.4 via binary from:
http://hpux.connect.org.uk/hppd/hpux/Shells/zsh-4.0.4/

My problem is something to do with the terminal. Whenever I backspace (or even CTRL+H), this is echoed as a space. This is very confusing from the prompt.

Additionally, other quirky things occur too, such as pressing the Up arrow to scroll through the history, echoes the output as a constant stream across the screen.

eg.
Typical output:
europa.julian% jkl jkljl envmc uname -aecho $PATHumask xterm &sam

As you can see, this is majorly frustrating.

Any help?

use stty

stty erase (punch the key to backspace)

I experienced the same phenomenon with zsh-4.0.6, compiled from sources, on HP-UXen 11.00 and 11.22.
My terminal is an XFree 4.0.3 xterm.

I had to obtain ncurses (http://dickey.his.com/ncurses/ncurses.html) and link against that to get rid of the problem.
