No technical about it. FreeBSD is a BSD variant, and has very few similarities to any Linux distribution. The only real similarity is that it's another Unix variant.

Unfortunately, I don't know any FreeBSD stuff, so don't know hwo to convince the kernel it has a given amount of memory. As my understanding goes, it should do it it's self, but..

Using 4.8 (not the newest distribution of FreeBSD either) might be part of your problem, but given the age of the machine, it probably offset's this.

I'd suggest finding a FreeBSD forum, and poking around there, unless any of our readers here know FreeBSD well?

Hi

i'im right now in my final exam and have problems with an old Compaq Proliant 5000 Server.

I managed to install FreeBSD 4.8 but it is only recognising 16mb RAM and only 1 CPU instead of 1gb RAM and 2 CPUs. I even built a kernel with this lines in it:

# To make an SMP kernel, the next two are needed
options SMP # Symmetric MultiProcessor Kernel
options APIC_IO # Symmetric (APIC) I/O

what else do I have to do?

thanks for your help

I bet red hat would recognize that hardware out of the box.

If possible try a different distribution. If not, try http://www.tldp.org

Technially FreeBSD isn't Linux(I think), though I don't know a better place to post your question.

SEP
