Let's see if I understand; you downloaded the source code for a new kernel, used rpm to compile and install it, and now you want to boot on it but it doesn't seem to be in the /boot path.

The rpm install should have built the 2.4.9-e40smp.img file. I'm not sure it would be in /boot. On my setup the boot process seems to be redirected from /boot to pick up the actual boot image from /lib/modules. You could check there to see if you find the .img file.

Vern

if you're running lilo, try Make bzlilo instead of make boot. this will install and configure the new kernel as the default boot option in lilo.

if you're using grub you need to copy the new kernel to boot manually and configure and rerun grub.

also check out http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Linux-i386-Boot-Code-HOWTO/index.html

You've got the source. Any guide on how to comiple and move a kernel into production will allow you to start using it.

SEP
