OK, just thought I'd provide some follow up on a previous post of mine. I attempted to install RH9 on an Iomega NAS unit. And I was successful. I stripped down the OS to make it lean by installing just the core apps. I opened the NAS, yes, a PC mother board with 4 IDE drives and 2 NIC cards. Nothing special. Linux loaded fine and it is running just great. We did this because we want to NFS out some filesystems, and windoze NFS...welll you know.

I did have a crazy problem during the first install. I loaded it up. loggen in 5 or six times. created my personal account and a backup account. All was fine. I changed the resolv.conf file for DNS and rebooted. NOW...cant log in as root, as myself or the backup account. Just like it forgot about my passwords. Anyone seen this before? Also, is there a way to back door the unit and hack the root or personal passwd? Been doing UNIX for 10 years and never saw this b4.

Can't you just boot to single user mode to get into the box.

If the only thing you changed was resolv.conf so that it needs DNS, maybe DNS is not working.

boot to init 1-to do that append 1 to the kernel's line in grub's menu.
This init (for emergency needs) gives you full access to the system without the need to specify password to login.
