I've been trying RedHat 7.1 (I know 7.2 is out but 7.1 was all we had the CDs for). For Mandrake I've got 8.1 sitting here getting very unhappy that it's not installed ;-)

Linux install on HP laptop

Hi all,
So I was wondering if anyone out there has gone through the pain of trying to set up Linux on one of the newer HP laptops. I've checked out linux-laptops.net with not much success for my particular problem- my Pavilion 5425. First thing I've realized is that doing a standard Red Hat or standard Mandrake install is a bad idea- the monitor never gets configured right. My main issue appears to be my video card- the trident cyberblade XP. I have big problems trying to get Linux to let me use my full monitor at 1024x768 and somehow xconfig doesn't like generic 14 inch laptop for my monitor type. I succesfully installed Mandrake using 800x600 but got some nasty screen flickers that let me know that the monitor was way out of sync. Any chance someone out there know what to do or can point me to someone who would know? Thanks!
Hi,

Goto http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/hp.html and
find Pavilion 5430. It uses same video card so that you may want to follow the procedure.

Regards,

have you tried the tft setting or was it just the standard 14" monitor.

I've used the standard tft one on a few laptops without any problems.

Cheers

George

Hi George,
I've only been using the standard 14 inch and not tft as I think I'm just not seeing the tft option in the list of monitor types in xconfig.

Erin,

Masanari's suggestion is sound.
I've been perusing this listing:
http://www.deater.net/john/PavilionN5430.html

which I got to from the link Masanari provided,
and it seems to have the answers you're looking for.

I have not a similar product to test, however, so cannot state catagorically that this is the whole answer.

Mark.
