Hi Everyone,
I am attempting to do a bare-metal restore os Redhat ES 3.0 ( and ES 2.1 and AS 2.1) but cannot find any good documentation on this. Here is what I have been able to do and not do.
I have several servers that I backup each night. I would like to be able to take a new server out of the box and put a barebones installation of linux on it, then add the backup client to it and restore from tape the data, reboot the box and everything should be fine. The newly restored box should have the same name, OS, Configuration, users, etc. of the server that was backed up to tape.
Well, I can accomplish this on my laptop, but not on any of the servers. I think the problem is in the sizing and order that the partitions are created. I don't think I am matching them correctly, and like I said, I am doing a full recovery all OS and data.

I am using Omniback A.04.10 as my backup manager.
Has anyone ran into this problem, or does anyone have a proven DR procedure they would like to share?

Thanks,
Rob

I'm not sure Omniback/DP can back up the OS configuration.

On HP-UX, Omniback does data and Ignite does OS configuration.

To restore a bootable Red Hat System you have a few options:

1) Boot a DOS CD and use Norton Ghost to do an image of the server.
2) Mondo/mindi, a tool that does Ignite style backups on Linux http://www.mondorescue.org/

SEP
Steven,
Thanks for the tip. I will definitely look into this. But I am able to use Omniback to do an OS restore to my laptop. I just put a simple install on the laptop, then the omniback client then restore ALL filesystems from tape...Including /boot, /root, etc. It then boots up to the proper (original) kernel and I have the same IP config, Userlist and hostname. Along with video card config and any added software. But for some reason I cannot get it to work correctly on my servers. I think I am not getting the partition order coorectly set.

Thanks,
Rob
