unset TMOUT

Or if you start up an application of any kind, even top the session will appear active and not be touched by TMOUT variable.

SEP

We can separate this as two method,

1. Your telnetd service getting inactive after reaching session timeout. ( but it is not in your case )

2. If you use modem to connect the server from your machine, then it may inactive the telnet session.

You can get over this problem by running a script suggested on
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=106287
in back ground mode so that it will keep the modem in link with connection
It's often a shell problem. If you're using tcsh, then unset AUTOLOGOUT.
