Some more details if I could please.

What kernel revision are you running ('rpm -q kernel' and 'uname -r') ?

What directory and how many files are in the directory where you report slow ls/df responses? (or is it every directory?).

What driver version are you using for the fibre channel controller? (use 'modinfo <DRIVER>', or attach '/var/log/dmesg').

What's the load averate usually report?</DRIVER>

You should be running the Enterprise kernel, this is for larger smp systems (4+cpu) and high memory configurations..

Second, your system is using 530MB of RAM for the OS & applications. The rest is being used for disk cache. Memory isn't the issue.

Are you booting the OS off the SAN or are you using local disks? Also, what is the primary application on this system?

have you tried looking at the number of processes and how much cpu they take? or it could also be one (or more) process is doing so much io it is killing the system.

using sar might be a good idea for that system... or any other performance data collecting tools you might have at hand.
