Hello,

The rp5400 has PA-Risc CPUs. The only Linux distro that runs on this is the PA-Linux version located here:

http://www.parisc-linux.org/release-0.9/index.html

It has 32 bit and 64 bit capability. It is basically a version of Debian and uses the Debian installer, package manager and other tools. Comes with the major packages like Apache, etc.

You can find additional info from Debian here:

http://www.debian.org/ports/hppa/

By the way your rp5400 is what was a L-Class. If you look at http://mkhppa1.esiee.fr/list.html

You will see that L1000/2000 are supported but the L3000 is not.

Thanks for participating in the forums,

Martin
Chaos reigns within. Reflect, repent, and reboot. Order shall return.

Hi,

I used to have a HP9000 rp5400 server with HPUX installed in it. I need to use this server for Linux server. I checked with the product specification on Web and it says the server Box is compatible with Linux as well.

http://www.hp.com/products1/servers/rackoptimized/rp5400series/specifications/index.html

Now when I tried to install Linux in this box from CD-Rom(Red Hat 7.2), I could not boot from CD-ROM and everytime I boot, the old HP-UX is booted. I have following in the box:

- 4 18.2 GB HDD
- DVD Red Hat Linux 7.2 CD distribution
- 1 4port Ethernet Adapter
- Console (GSP)
- LAN/SCSI

I have attached my computer with the box and using HyperTerminal to access it.

in the MAIN MENU to search Boot path from GSP, I see following table:

Path# Device Path (dec) Device Path (mnem) Device Type
P0 0/0/1/1.2 intscsib.2 Random Access Media
P1 0/0/1/1.0 intscsib.0 Random Access Media
P2 0/0/2/0.2 intscsia.2 Random access media
P3 0/0/2/1.2 media.2 Random access media

Can anyone point to me how can I make the server boot from Linux CD and install Linux in these box, overwriting the existing HPUX images from Disks. Also I am wondering how RAID is supported in this box and if Linux has all teh drivers for devices in this box. Is there any specific steps to be followed?

Thanks for yrou help/advices.

Regards
Manohar

You need to interrupt the boot process and change the boot path to the CDROM, otherwise it will automatically boot from the primary boot path.

live free or die
harry

Hi,

Thanks, Yeah I have interrupted in the boot process and I was able to be in MAIN menu. From there, I tried to boot from CDROM using BO command however I coudld not figure out how to boot from CDRom. I tried all the 4 available path but none of them works.

Any Idea if CDROM will have separate device name and path as in Linux?

Regards
Manohar

Manohar,

After doing a lot of searching, I found that REDHAT is not supported, actually doesn't run on, the PA-RISC chips. It might run on the Itanium chips. look into the parisc-linux.org site for their porting to pa-risc chips.

live free or die
harry
