this may not be the cleanest way, but you could boot to a lilo or grub floppy. there are a ton of tutorials out there on how to do this. I have solaris on my on my xp partition after installing it wrot its own boot manager to the mbr and had a selection for the #1 partition which is my xp. I have vector linux installed on my second HD which I accsess with a boot floppy.

I have a PC keynux Impac that should work fine with Xp and Linux.

see
http://www.keynux.com/default_zone/fr/html/Prod_Notebook_Impac_Details.php

I have installed Knoppix 3.7 on disk (with Lilo), then fedora 2.7 (with no ,Grub) and XP SP2.
Of course it is the wrong order

So now it boots XP directly.

What should I do to have a running Lilo again ?

Boot the Knoppix CD and then ?

thanks for any hint

PS: ignore the attachment

you know what. you could boot from a cd that gives you the option to boot from a partition then you could select your knoppix partition perhaps the system rescue CD? I never used it before but you could give it a try.

what I have done is used the install disk from vector linux 4.3, booted from it and it ask me for the location of my linux kernel after that I say /dev/hda3, it discovers the kernel and boots the os.

you may also be able to find some bootable grub or lilo cd images that you can use to load the system by the cd or by installing to your mbr

http://www.ibiblio.org/vectorlinux/

http://www.sysresccd.org/

I'm doing exactly what you wish to do right now.

Here is the process:

I obtained a laptop with XP home on it.

I fired it up and defragmented it.

I downloaded and created a boot cd of a Linux distribution specifically designed to let me modify the partition sizes.

The name of the distribution is system rescue cd.

http://www.systemrescuecd.org

I booted off this cd and reduced the XP parition from 60 GB to 15 GB.

Then I booted off my chosen Linux distribution and let grub be the boot manager.

To boot XP i have to intervene with a keystroke at boot time and arrow down to XP.

Simple, functional, reliable.

SEP
