I did a quick look up on the error code you were getting, and it would appear there are several possibilities, ranging from need for a new scsi adapter driver to checking termination and cabling.

Is this a new installation that has never worked, or a working tape drive that has now quit? If it worked under previous kernel version, then driver is very likely the culprit. If new, never-before working on this box tape drive, check the cabling/termination first before running out in search of an updated device driver.

Here's one post of a similar problem (sorry, no solution offered here)
http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0108.2/1020.html

but his description seems to indicate poor interaction between his kernel version and the scsi driver.

Hope this points you in the right direction!

Mark

The tape library you are using is HP made, but Sun labled DLT library, is that correct?

That DLT library works with FW SCSI. Your SCSI controller card seems not FW SCSI controller card. If you would like to have it work on your controller card, you will need to get a hi8 terminated cable or high-8 terminator. I don't think HP make that. It is easier to just get a FW-SCSI controller card.
