A few things to check first:

From the server, can you go th RedHat's RHN web-page, and log in? ( http://www.redhat.com/software/rhn/ )

What distribution are you actually using?

What are the exact words of the error messages?

I am having trouble connecting to the RedHat network to update my system.
When launching Up2Date, the service returns an error stating it cannot contact RHN for first check-in.
ANy idea how I can check if I can communicate properly.

Can I disable some linux ipchain firewall stuff or something?

Try installing the latest up2date RHN packages. Sometimes, and old up2date package may not comunicate properly with RHN.
do you have RHN subscription? if not get one.

Ensure your system can connect to internet. RHN requires network connection.

Another possibility could be a firewall blocking your connections. Try disabling firewall 'service iptables stop'

Hope this helps,
Gopi

To use up2date port 443 (https) must be open, and DNS resolution available. If either of these has a problem the red up2date icon will be shown as greyed-out.
Try "dig rhn.redhat.com". If this works OK try "up2date -u" from the command-line.
