dc5100 i915G and me

I just upgraded from a d530 minitower to a dc5100 minitower. I had been using Mandriva, but it "oops"'s at startup time. Store bought SUSE 9.3 seems to work, though. It boots and installed OK, but whenever it kicks into X, nasty things happen. If I use the "i810" driver, then the screen will black out, leave a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen,and freeze the system. If I use the "vesa" driver, then things work, but I'm sure that I'm not using all the chip's features.
SUSE has a tool to dump system stats, but it gives very detailed info. I can send the dump upon request.

I believe your dc5100 uses i915 chipset, so using i810 driver will definetly blank out the screen.

Try running SaX2 from command prompt and see whether it is able to recognize the card automatically and configures it. Otherwise you may have to look up for some updated drivers for this machine from HP.

SaX2 is what decided in using the "i810" module in the first place. Looking at the man page for "i810" claims that the i915G chip is one that the driver supports. I did restore the "i810" entry in xorg.conf, and now it comes up fine. However, when X shuts down, the machine locks up. Even SysRQ-B doesn't rouse it. (I know, "so don't get out from X") Back to "vesa", I guess.
