I work back and forth between Linux and
HP-UX. Major functionality is much the
same. I find the major difference is the
directory structure.
Init directory are in /etc/ not /sbin;
logs are in /var/log, commands are NOT
in /etc/.
Check the documentation under man hier.

Internet configuration is also significantly
different. I prefer the Linux versions
to that used in HP-UX.

Redhat Linux comes in 3 flavours:
1.Enterprise Server
2. Advance Server and
3. Workstation

hence RHAS refers to Redhat Advance Server and the latest RHAS is RHAS 4.

You can find full documentation at
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise

On the 2nd part I find Linux on the same lines as HP UX so you will find it quite easy.

Cheers and Have fun with RH

Thanks..is there any compatibility guide between HP-UX and Linux? Since i knw HP-UX very well that would be easy to learn. init scripts are in /etc instead of /sbin(HP-UX) is a start. Any pointers would be helpful..

Thanks again

Joe

Shalom,

If your applications will tolerate it, the advantage of the 4.0 series of RH is that it has the 2.6 kernel. It is more efficient, more secure and more stable than any 2.4 kernel I've worked with.

Its more than worth it when setting up new servers.

I've got a decade in with HP-UX and I still find the naming conventions of Linux from RH strange. There are six updates of 2.1 AS for example. I can't find a chart of which is which and which came with what kernel.

the /etc/redhat-release file doesn't help like it does with 3.x and up.

Still, I'm the company Linux guru, so I live with it and try and learn.

Good Luck,

SEP

the unix rosetta stone can be found here:
http://bhami.com/rosetta.html

the naming convention of RH, what's so strange about that? also it doesn't really matter much which update you have installed. these include bugfixes etc. and the versions of packages should stay the same, the only thing that changes is the revision number which has no or very minor impact. even kernel modules should compile without problems and those closed drivers work as well or bad as always.

If you know HP-UX - it is pretty easy to pick up Linux.

Course, there are a few minor differences - but that's what Rosetta Stone is for. :)

HP offers training as well:

http://www.hp.com/education/sections/linux.html

This would be a good one for yourself:

http://www.hp.com/education/courses/u2794s.html

Rgds...Geoff
