How to read emails using "Kmail" or "Thunderbird" ?

Dear All,
In my servers (HP-UX & Linux), I always read the mails using the command “mailx” or simply “mail”. How to read these emails using a mail client such as “Kmail” or “Thunderbird”????? Also, is it possible to check these mails from my WinXP machine using MS Outlook 2003 or outlook express?

Shalom Tamer,

How you access mail depends on the server process that provides access.

mailx or mail do not require a server process running to permit mail reading.

Kmail and Thunderbird on the other hand do require a server process to read mail.

Linux has dovecot, which ships with the OS. Its easy to configure and provides pop3 and imap access.

HP-UX has qpopper, which provides popmail access and cyrus, which provides both popmail and imap access.

These products are part of Internet Express, which is available at http://software.hp.com

What SEP tried to say is that mailx reads the mail from a predefined location on the machine it runs on. This was fine back in the times where each machine was doing everything, including receiving mail.
TBird, Kmail, OE (actuall almost all mail clients) rely on separate mail servers which must be able to store the mail received for its users and hand it to them when needed (usually using POP, IMAP or other proprietary protocol) and to take new composed messages from the clients and send it (directly or not) to the intended destination[s].
Back to your problem: as SEP has said, you will be able to use TBird or Kmail IF the server which stores the messages will hand them to you either via POP3 or via IMAP. As for which specific software to use for the POP/Imap server, that's a whole different story. A few years ago, the most used Linux software was uw-imap. Nowadays there are a bunch of solutions, either commercial or free, such as dovecot, cyrus, courier-imap, qpopper and many others.

and after you'll set up some IMAP server on your linux box, you'll be able to read emails using Outlook.

Now I understood the idea. To apply, how to install and configure (POP3 or IMAP) server in SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 9.0 and for HP-UX 11i v1.
(TEN) points for full proper steps!!

Kmail is my favorite. It's not hard to set up. If you're getting your mail from an IP you'll need their server name and your password. You might want to check with their tech support, particularly on the server name. If you have a local mail server mounted you simply put in the path, for example "/mnt/ns1/var/spool/mail/(username)." If you have both types, simply set up multiple accounts and it will check them all.

I alias all my local mail to ns1 so I don't have to set up an account on each individual machine to get the logs.

We use as e-mail server SUN/Solaris.
I have to work on different systems and I want on all systems access to my e-mail in the same way.
- SuSE Linux 10 in my office: Thunderbird
- HP-UX 11i (11.11) for ECAD: Mozilla
- Alpha/VMS 7.3-1 for Oracle: Mozilla
- Micro$oft Windows2000: Thunderbird
Thunderbird or Mozilla are setup to use imap for e-mail so I have on all systems identical setup for folders and so on.
