How do u verify actual network link on a Redhat 4.0 machine?

I am using ethtool. This should be online values.

And most time we should have autonegotiate set to ON.

Should a need to force speed to be set? Can this be done using ethtool as well?

Hi Cliff, can you explain please what do you mean when you say " verify actual network link " do you mean connection up to third level ( we then use ping ) or you mean connection up to 7th level ( we then use telnen ... for example as tool to verify our connection )
