    <description>Firstly, thankls for all the speedy reply and help. &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;OK. Thanks Vernon.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;It looks like the problem was root. I have opened other accounts and can retreive pop from the server.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Now another question&lt;BR /&gt;The authentication process takes almost 20 seconds&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Here is the output of  /etc/pam.d/popa3d&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;auth       required     /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth&lt;BR /&gt;account    required     /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth&lt;BR /&gt;password   required     /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth&lt;BR /&gt;session    required     /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Can you help me out?</description>

      <description>Centos 3.5 VPS machine&lt;BR /&gt;was installed with a minimum of packages&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;pop3ad runnning under xinetd.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;When pop3'ing in to the server I get an error no matter what user I login with.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;-ERR Authentication failed (bad password?)&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;from var/log/maillog&lt;BR /&gt;Jun 13 11:04:20 NV7258-Atid-E-D-I popa3d[7492]: Authentication failed for root from xx.xx.xx.xx&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Tried to install dovecot but that does not work either, &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;HELP??????&lt;BR /&gt;</description>

      <description>May be a problem logging in as root. Make sure your mail users have regular login accounts on the server?</description>

      <description>I prefer dovecot, what is the authentication method that you are using? Can you share the pop3 pam related files located in /etc/pam.d</description>

      <description>Some of my pop3 accounts take about 20 seconds to seem to connect; I always thought it was my spam filters churning away.</description>
