Windows uses a mix of LDAP and Kerberos. You can use LDAP + SAMBA on Linux to act as a domain controller and authenticate windows clients, but this will be more similar to the domain controller infraestructure of NT 4.0 considering the features, but with the difference that you will be using LDAP instead of a local database.
