Why do you want to use linux software raid if the smart array controller provides "hardware based" array capabilities?

You can check the configuration or modify the configuration using Array configuration utility, included in the smart start CD.

The face is I don't want to use hardware raid.

Should the hardware controller goes bad, i want to be able to move the disks to another server (another brand/controler) without any hassle.

Laurent

With smart arrays, you can physically move the disks to another controller and the configuration will be picked up from the disks. The new controller will retain the raid configuration.

>>> What will happen if i move the disks to a non hp server with a non hp smart array card ?

In that case, I'm not sure, but probably you won't be able to read the RAID configuration and you won't be able to boot.

But I think that this will be a disaster situation, in which case, you probably need to have another recovery option, like a system backup using mondo rescue, that allows you to restore the system image to a different physical disk layout.
