Not Detecting Network Adapter

Hi all,

I have install Fedora Core 3 on my mew machime
Compaq Presario SR5060IL PC
Problem is that Fedora is not recognising on board Ntework Adpter card.
when i put command
#ifconfig
l0
sit0
i m not also getting MAC address in above output

What should i do?

Shalom,

Try a CD based distribution such as Knoppix or even FC6. If it can't find the NIC its dead.

The box may be one of these new ones that has no Linux support. In that case its caveat emptor. Most low end boxes from HP are certified windows only.

Try booting the hardware diag disk that came with the system or can be downloaded from the HP website. If the card works for windows and not Linux, thats one conclusion, if it fails all tests, buy a $10 add in card and use that instead.

Fedora Core 3? Fedora stops supporting FC5 soon and you're installing FC3 on a NEW MACHINE?

Install a more recent version to see if your hardware is supported.

Also, use "lspci" to find out what kind of Network Adapter you have.

I just now install newer Fedora Version( Core 6 ).
after installing and rebooting its desplaying at boot time

GRUB Loading Stage2......

WHat shd then i do....?

I have to point out up front that the SR5060IL isn't tested or supported with any linux distribution. There may be hardware in that system that even the newest kernels don't have drivers for.

You should check that the system has the most current BIOS installed. Version 5.12 came out just a few days ago. It might help.

The newer kernel in FC 6 might be getting into more trouble than the FC 3 kernel by using newer features that old kernel would not even attempt to use. You could try using a pci=nommconf kernel boot option to prevent the kernel from trying to use the recently added support for memory mapped IO.

You could also try an even newer kernel such as an Ubuntu Feisty live CD.

The real solution is to gethardware that is linux certified.

That probably being impossible, you have to wait until some Linux supports it. Communicating with the large distributions helps. Red Hat has a hardware profile upload tool that lets them know what hardware users want to use.
