Ignite won't be released on Linux because Ignite relies heavily on SD-UX which does not exist in Linux.

There are Linux opensource backup solutions at http://www.linux.org/apps/ Backburner looks like a good possibility.

The open source will work.

I actually boot the system once a month with a boot disk and Norton Ghost 7. Ghost lets you write an image to cd or a network drive,(you will need the right dos nic drivers on the boot disk).

I have successfully restored full Linux systems this way.

I also tar all /etc data to a file called /backups/net.tar

An ftp script on a windows server makes sure the file gets backed up. I'm eventually openning up samba so the drive can be mapped for backup.

Red Hat Linux has "kickstart" on the lines of "jumpstart" (on solaris) and "ignite" on hp-ux.

This tool can make a bootable CD (or tape, or ISO) from your current Linux environment which you can use a recovery/rescue CD.
You can also excludes files, etc..And it's opensource , so you can modify it...

Great tool.
