Shalom,

Red Hat supports yum and up2date for updating systems. You can use apt-get on Red Hat for Non RHN. It involves some work, and yum is better suited for the OS.

SEP

I would like to setup apt-get on Redhat , does RHN support it like debian ? for example , if I want the system automatically run up2date regluarly without need to do anything , is it possible ( of course I have offical license ) ? If I also want when I update a rpm , if the pre-req. is not installed in my system , it will automatically search it from web , can RHN support this function ? thx

The up2date or yum command (depending of the version) provides that functionality, it will handle dependencies.

They can run at scheduled intervals without user intervention.

go for yum, redhat is also supporting it (from a certain level). it is also used by centos.
apt for rpm is available as a community project only.

thx replies,

What is the difference between yum and apt-get on RHN , what I found is when I install a rpm, it always report the existing rpm is not update ( pre-req is not installed ) , so it ask to install the suitable version of rpm first , if I want to get the latest version of pre-req from the web automatically , which command ( yum or apt-get ) should i use ? thx

If you're using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 you use "yum install packagename". If you're using an older version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux you use "up2date packagename".

yum is reasonably similar to apt-get in both functionality and usage. up2date isn't quite as good, but it works well enough.

apt-get is the standard package management tool for Debian based Linux distros. It has been ported to various other distributions, but since RedHat has it's own package management software : yum and up2date, you should stick to one of these. I suppose yum is a better choice, since up2date is used as a wrapper around YUM in RHEL5.
