Hi Folks,

We have SUSE Enterprise Linux 9 installed on a server; and we would like to upgrade it to SUSE Enterprise Linux 10 SP1.

Could you please clarify the below questions:

1. If I need to upgrade to SLES 10 SP1, do I need to upgrade current SLES 9 to SLES 9 SP3 and then upgrade it to SLES 10 SP1.

2. Could you please provide me the upgrade instructions both to SLES 9 SP3 and SLES 10 SP1

Thanks for quick response!!

Regards,
Girish

Hi,

Upgrade to SLES10 then apply SLES10 SP1. SP1 is a patch CD, not a full release.

Upgrading is *fairly* easy. Upgrade steps will depend on how you build your systems to a certain extent (for example my installation sources are all network based). But the bottom line is... just follow the online instructions! There is a step that asks you if you want to perform a new installation or upgrade an existing one.

Be aware that the upgrade *may* fail if you have added non-standard rpms, and if you don't ensure that enough space is present on the system for the upgrade to take place (I have upgraded from SLES9 SP3 to SLES10 3 times without any issues, and once it trashed the system when I ran out of space).

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP BEFORE YOU START!

(thought I'd better shout that bit)... :-)

Colin.

Huh? SLES 10 SP1 is a full distribution. I've been installing fresh from that media for a couple of months. I did find that it went much smoother to boot from the media and perform the upgrade offline that trying to do the multistep online option, however.

Hi Jeff,

You're right - my bad. Its changed between SLES9 and 10 (9 definitely wasn't a full release, though you could boot from an SP CD and install updated RPMs right from the start). Having only just downloaded the SLES10 SP1 ISO image, I hadn't looked at it properly :-(

Oh well, live and learn.....
