hi there

1/
some error should be logged in something called .xsession* in your home directory (the home directory of the user that's running the startx command)

you should check that - i do know that gnome had(has?) some issues with NFS mounted home directories

2/ if 1 brings no relevant messages, you could try launching gnome via it's native launcher (gdm)

if you're using startx i imagine you're booting into runlevel 3 - try booting into runlevel 5 and logging in via gdm

hope this helps
c
