Based on the kernel version string, you have RedHat Enterprise Linux (=RHEL) 3. There is not enough information to determine whether you're using AS, ES or WS version of the distribution. However, we _can_ see you aren't quite up to date with kernel patches :-)

See:

passwd -S <USER>
chage -l <USER>

The first command will tell you whether the account is locked or not.
The second command will display password/account expiration times.

MK</USER></USER>

Shalom,

Depends on what kind of Linux you are using.

Red Hat has a nice GUI called system-config-users

There is a system-config for many common tasks.

SEP

"encrypted password set, MD5" is normal for an active account.

"chage -l" is the better one. The account gets locked due to multple reason. As far i know the chage covers those lock reasons and displays

Last Change: Jan 29, 2008
Password Expires: Mar 29, 2008
Password Inactive: Apr 28, 2008
Account Expires: Never
