usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout

RedHat 3.0 - 2.4.21-4.ELsmp

The computers only have USB 1.0 ports.

I have a USB 2.0 360GB external drive on the computer. I can transfer data back and forth with the only issue being that at times the system bogs down for a minute or so - but then continues. No errors are reported and no loss of data.

I just picked up 2 USB 2.0 4Gb flash drives (pen drives).

Sometimes they work and sometimes I get errors.

I've played with the following utilities:

o fdisk
o mke2fs
o mount / unmount

Sometimes you can do any/all of them as much as you want. Then, for whatever reason, the following errors appear in

SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 70000
I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 55176
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout

(the sector number changes over time).

The system remains operational but the load goes to about 4.0. The very-active processes are the invoked utility (right now it is mke2fs) and usb-storage-0.

I usually reboot the system after a few minutes but while typing this I left it up longer and just got the following message:

usb-storage: host_reset() requested but not implemented
scsi: device set offline - command error recover failed: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 6070000
I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 265986
I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 265988
I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 524304
(lots more I/O errors follow).

Any ideas?

Get your kernel up to date: the current RHEL 3 multiprocessor kernel is something like 2.4.21-57.ELsmp. It contains a large number of bug fixes.

If you are properly registered with the RedHat Network, the update can be done by simply running up2date. As this is a kernel update, you should schedule a reboot at some convenient time after the up2date run is complete. Kernel updates take effect only after a reboot.

Please update latest patches, after that you will get resolve your problem.
To Avoid other problems also, which is related to latest patches.
