I think he's looking for something akin to Winderz Messenger. Is there such a CLI-driven app the can be used in either a RedHat/Fedora or Debian/Ubuntu environment? I dunno that one, myself, but wouldn't mind learning of one...

Cheers;
Ed
If you mean an instant messaging client, Pidgin works reasonably well and is included by Red Hat. I assume SuSE also packages it since it's widely used.

The IM system to which you want to connect is also important because not all clients support all servers/protocols equally well.

Not sure what you meant here: "something which doesnt require a server to manage the hosts.", but I've setup internal-only Jabber/XMPP servers for multiple customers using JabberD2.x, and it's worked great for them:

http://jabberd2.xiaoka.com/

Btw, we used pidgin as the client, but many different clients support XMPP.

HTH
He's looking for a P2P messenger, setting up a jabber server is not a bad idea, but if you don't have a dedicated server you can try one of these:

Windows Only
http://www.codeguru.com/cpp/i-n/network/messaging/article.php/c5419/

Linux/Windows (Java):
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=156803&package_id=175047&release_id=454963
