Hi Mohamed/Ivaan,

To add this topic, i have an application running on HP UX 11.11 on an L class server, runs fine.

But when i enabled shadow passwd on it, it fails to authenticate the user.

The appln. experts say it can support only MD5 shadow password and not the plain one.

In that case i belive HP UX shadow does not support MD5 by default. If i am right, could you please tell me how can i convert the shadow password entry (atleast for specific user id) to MD5 format?

Appreciate your reply.

BTW the same appln runs fine in linux after shadow enabled.

Regards

Sundar

Hi Nataris,

Linux do allow you to use md5 to encrypt /etc/shadow password.Red Hat can use MD5 So can Mandrake, SuSE, Debian, etc. If you don't choose MD5, most Linux distros will normally use the old (weak) Unix encryption "crypt".

Rgds//
Taifur

the encrypt method used in shadow file is MD5, and the command crypt is used to encypt.
Regards.
