Ganesan's both links *do* provide instructions for setting up a server too. Please read the web pages again.

If you don't have a GPS receiver or any other high-precision time source, your NTP server will use the internal clock of the server machine. For that, no much configuration is needed: just adjust the "restrict" lines so that your server allows your clients to access it. (By default, RHEL 5 ntpd does not allow access).

However, it is recommended that you link your NTP server with at least two other NTP servers. That way, the local NTP server can minimize any clock errors: if the server's own clock reports one time and two other NTP servers both report a different time *and the remote servers agree with each other*, your NTP server will assume its local clock is broken/inaccurate and uses the time of the remote servers instead.

Then just start it up and make sure it will be started automatically when the system reboots:

service ntpd start
chkconfig ntpd on

If you have a GPS receiver or some other high-precision time source you wish to use, please read its manual first. Also read the NTP documentation at www.ntp.org. If you still need help after that, please describe exactly the model of your server and your time source.

MK
