LVM Corrupted...Need help

My system's LVM is corrupted.
When I try to boot get following error:

Volume Group "VolumeGroup00" not found
unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup00/swap)
mount : could npt find file system '/dev/root'
setuproot : moving /dev failed : No such file or dir
setuproot : error mounting /proc : No such file or dir
setuproot : error mounting /sys : No such file or dir
switchroot : mount failed : No such file or dir
Kernel Panic -not syncing : attempting to kill init !

I don have the install CD also.
Can anyone tell me how to recover my LVM

Hi Neel,

One Idea to get yourself going...

Needless to say you need a method of mounting the root filesystem..

Why not download a copy of Knoppix which will certainly have a go at trying to mount the disk..

You can then try and dectect the root filesystem by that method using pvscan, at least this way you will be able to try and ascertain what the issue really is...

appriciate your idea. Actually i'm trying to learn linux and have to do it without downloading anything. I have grub installed in the system. Can it help??

Hi Neel,

You can try booting it into single user mode, so for example when you get the grub menu select your chosen kernel press e for edit and and the move to the end of the kernel line and type "single" return back to main menu and boot the kernel.

Its not a permanent config change but this could be handy to help..

You may find that you still run into issues as I cant remember when LVM starts up...

Try and view knoppix as just a tool, from time to time administrators do need to reach for the cdrom to boot off try and preform recoverys...

Can you indicate your distribution?

I think booting into single user mode is a good idea.

It would appear that /dev is wiped out.

For RHEL

Boot at the system console.

select a kernel to boot

e for edit

add single to the kernel boot command line.

b to boot
