      <description>We have rhel 5.1 at one of our customers and they want to disable strong passwords. Like users can choose dicstionary or easy passwords.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Can some one please provide me the procedure to do that?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Thanks in advance</description>

      <description>Please see:&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;A href="http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/rhel-fedora-centos-linux-password-quality-control/" target="_blank"&gt;http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/rhel-fedora-centos-linux-password-quality-control/&lt;/A&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;To disable password quality checking, edit&lt;BR /&gt;/etc/pam.d/system-auth. Review all lines beginning with the keyword "password". Comment out the lines that refer to pam_passwdqc.so (= an algorithmic quality checker) or pam_cracklib.so (= a dictionary checker).&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;The pam_unix.so module may also set some password requirements, so check its options (use the command "man pam_unix" to find out what they mean). For example, "remember=N" would make the system remember N previous passwords for each user and prevent the user from using them again. &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Do not disable pam_unix.so completely, because it's the module responsible for actually reading/writing /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow in the first place.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;MK</description>
