Could you please let us know how the root partition is made. is the formatted ext3 from a block device directly or have u created a LVM?
post the output of lvdisplay and mount commands.

Hey,

Try this. it went smooth for me.

lvextend -L +1024 /dev/vg01/xyz /dev/sda6
ext2online /dev/rootvg/root

if not 2, use ext3
