An example of what you are seeing would be helpful.

When I execute the "last" command on my SuSE servers, I don't see anything that says "down".

Hi,

down or shutdown represents the last time that the server was shutdown, ie:

$ last -x|grep shutdown | head -1
Output:

shutdown system down  2.6.15.4         Sun Apr 30 13:31 - 15:08  (01:37)

source:http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-last-reboot-time-and-date-find-out.html

Hope that helps

regards

Matt
