Using ISP Netzero under Linux

Hey Folks;

O/S: RedHat 3.0 AS

I signed up with NETZERO as my ISP.

They DO NOT support Linux. Probably
not a problem - I'll set things up
myself.

So I built a WindozeXP disk, got it
to connect to NZ, and wrote down all
the stuff I needed to know, like POP
SMTP DNS ROUTING info etc. When I
signed-off it downloaded some sort of
an upgrade.

Then I brought up my Linux box, set up
all the parameters and dialed into NZ.

Their homepage loaded on Mozilla. I
was able to do e-mail. Everything looked
good until I tried to surf.

The problem is that no matter what I
enter into the browser field I get
connected to a NZ upgrade computer.

I talk with one of the guys that is a
web admin (here). He speculates that
their upgrade server is looking for a
cookie that lets it know I am running
the latest version of their S/W, and
since it can't find it, it won't let
me go. And since I'm not running I.E.,
it can't download anything to satisfy it.

I explained everything in a long
e-mail to NZ's tech support, and
received such non-sequitur answers
that I accused them of using a
Kibology interface to reply to e-mails.

The only idea I've come up with so far
is to rebuild the WindozeXP disk and
watch what cookies it gets during the
initial connection, and then after it
does its upgrade. I don't know if that
will work.

Anybody got any ideas?

I like my Mozilla e-mail, under Linux,
and have actually set up the Windoze
server to connect to NZ, so I can surf
the web, and then have the Linux box
go thru it to do my Linux Mozilla e-mail.

The problem is after only 5 connections
to the internet, the WindozeXP box came
down with the HACKER virus. That's gotta
be some kind of a record. :-/
To log into Netzero you have to use their client and view their ads.

Their client does not run on Linux.

You have a problem. Windows can be made secure btw, its just not secure out of the box.

SEP

Closing thread because I received the answer.

NetZero does not support Linux, but they
do support Lindows (or whatever it is
called these days).

I have been told that there ARE ISPs that
are Linux-friendly.

regards,
tonyp
