Omnibook 6000 and SuSE 10.1

I've recently installed 10.1, and when it attempts to go to the graphical login, the screen goes black/blank. The TTYs work fine, but no graphics. I'd tries messing with the video modes to make them more conservitave (800x600), and also tried to tweak the xorg.conf to look more like the XF86Config-4 Knoppix 4.0 generates (drivers/modelines etc.), since Knoppix 4.0 works fine... same result.

Here's an odd one though. If I start it in failsafe with the above tweaked xorg.conf, then "init 5" the graphics comes up fine...

Any thoughts? SAX doesn't seem to be helping matters... it just spits out configs that don't work (via -al), or if I run it interactively, it just makes my screen switch to graphics mode (and go black).

Take a look at gdm.conf, it can have an impact on this.

Hmm... I'd selected KDE/kdm, not GNOME. Do you still think a GNOME file would help? What configuration in the file were you thinking might help?

Check "Monitor" section in xorg.conf, make sure you have "VertRefresh" set to 60 - no range here, simply:

VertRefresh 60

I think your best bet at this point is to look for error messages in the /var/log directory, especially the logs created by the X11 server processes. I am not a SUSE Linux user, but I expect that one of the many logs in that location will provide a clue as to the source of your problems.

Thanks all,

I never figured out *exactly* caused this, but I think I found a working solution.

I'd noticed that failsafe always worked, so through process-of-elimination found the parameter that got me running.

In the /boot/grub/menu.lst file, change the vga= to vga=normal.

Once that's done, the SAX-output corg.conf files work fine.
