All,
I did a test on software raid1 by pulling one of the disk out. Then putting it back in and rebooted the server. The server booted up ok, but during boot up it failed to add the disk back to the raid group. Here's the error:
"md: kicking non-fresh sdb1 from array!
md: unbind<SDB1>
md: export_rdev(sdb1)
md: RAID level 1 does not need chunksize! Continuing anyway.
md: raid1 personality registered as nr 3
md1: max total readahead window set to 124k
md1: 1 data-disks, max readahead per data-disk: 124k
raid1: device sdc1 operational as mirror 1
raid1: md1, not all disks are operational -- trying to recover array
raid1: raid set md1 active with 1 out of 2 mirrors
md: recovery thread got woken up ...
md1: no spare disk to reconstruct array! -- continuing in degraded mode
" and here's the output of lsraid:" [dev 9, 1] /dev/md1 C9F753CF.DC3F6FFD.FD0DE732.6FD273C8 online
[dev ?, ?] (unknown) 00000000.00000000.00000000.00000000 missing
[dev 8, 33] /dev/sdc1 C9F753CF.DC3F6FFD.FD0DE732.6FD273C8 good

[dev 8, 17] /dev/sdb1 C9F753CF.DC3F6FFD.FD0DE732.6FD273C8 unbound
". Any idea how can I can /dev/sdb1 back into raid group /dev/md1 without recreating and losing the data on the filesystem. FYI, I am testing this out before putting this into production. Thanks.

</SDB1>

I know you're going to hate me for this but.

I did this before and had to recover from it. I'm 800 miles away from my server.

When I ran this test, this is where I found the command to resynch the mirrors.

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/ATA-RAID-HOWTO.html

or

http://www-oss.fnal.gov/~mengel/mirror_root_mini_howto.html

or

https://listman.redhat.com/pipermail/seawolf-list/2002-November/017139.html

I'm going through the docs and trying to find out which one actually helped me but may not get to it before the kiddies go to sleep and I have to turn off this computer.

SEP

This looks most promising but seems to be missing something.

http://www-oss.fnal.gov/~mengel/mirror_root_mini_howto.html

Here is a new one, looks like it might help.

http://www.linuxhq.com/ldp/howto/Software-RAID-0.4x-HOWTO-4.html

SEP
