flashes of filenames

While doing a ls -ltr on a linux box,the filenames sometimes flash on and off. How to disable that.

That probably means a symbolic link that points to an non existent file. Your best option is to remove the symbolic link.

You can disable the colors in ls by modifying the alias:

alias ls="ls --color=none"

Add that to the profile.
