Dear Friends,
I like to know the details of Linux. I am at present working on HP_UX 11.00. I want to have Linux in my environment. The things I required are
a) What are the platforms on which Linux available?
b) where from it can be down loaded freely ?
c) Where from applications running on Linux can be down loaded ?
d) problems in running a custom built applications Oracle if any and How it can be fixed ?
e) Study materials where from I can down load freely for Linux ?

I can give you these answers:

b) you can go to the main sites of the distributors. www.redhat.com, www.mandrakesoft.com, www.suse.com. There are a lot of mirrors, too. Try searching in google.

c) a good site (for me) is www.rpmfind.net. but you got to know the name of the application.

e) great site is www.tldp.org (The Linux Documentation Project). Here you can find the official HOWTOs documents; they cover almost any aspect of the system. I suggested to download the whole HOWTOs documentation in order to consult it quickly.

Ok,

a) Linux is available for several platforms, the cheapest being x86 (any PC), but also it also runs on (at least) the Compaq Alpha AXP, Sun SPARC and UltraSPARC, Motorola 68000, PowerPC, PowerPC64, ARM, Hitachi SuperH, IBM S/390, MIPS, HP PA-RISC, Intel IA-64, DEC VAX, AMD x86-64 and CRIS architectures.

b) Linux most of the time works on the concept of 'distribution', a full set made of of the kernel itself and several modules, quite useful as a whole. There are many of them, with slight difference,s I suggest Red Hat, which should be N??1 among pros. You can download latest version from
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/9/en
(isos to get CD rom, Os for direct, I suggest iso, then boot from cd 1)

c) with that you'll get many applications. Try and if you need something more specific, ask here or just goole on 'application name' +linux, and you'll find something.

d) It depends on what you built. Oracle works great on Redhat. You'll find additional support here :

Read the 8.0 part, the 9 is not freely online, but there are minor changes between 8.0 and 9.0 as far as doc is concerned.

a) If you really want to know which architectures linux runs on check http://kernel.org/

b) I will say GNU/Linux more than Linux. Linux is just the kernel. The OE (Operating Environment) from compilers to shells and other applications are from GNU. Many companies/distributors offer GNU/Linux. The most popular is RedHat and the most pure(!!!) is Debian. So you can check their websites and get the distributions for free.

c) Most distributions come with applications/utilities itself. If you want more check http://rpmfind.net.

d) Oracle supports Linux very well. The problems can be fixed only if we know the problems!. You can ask back here if you get across any.

e) You can start from the respective distros user guides.
http://tldp.org has got a good collection of Free books and how-to docs.

1)Best way to know more about Linux is to start
using it.Choose your distributive (company that uses Linux kernel and libraries plus some common software but do it their way.)I personally think RedHat,Mandrake,Debian and SuSe are most popular.

hi naga,

you have got tons of users.

and so i am just giving a few pointers here.

1. the best way to get a Linux CD and some initial help is to ask the local LUG (linux users group). from which part of the india u. probability is very high that an active user group exists in ur area.

2. anyone from the LUG might be even able to give u some initial help in setting up ur box if it is for personal use.

3. and the best friend for linux docs is the howto's which normally comes with the distro. or can be found on tldp or many of its mirrors. just google and u will be loaded with information.

4. the first time when u ask a question on a mailing list, you might be given a rude RTFM (read the fine manual) or STFw (search the fine web). so, do some homework and provide maximum info for people to help u. fortunately u have discovered one of the best places to get help from on linux. just post here and sit back for ur solution :-) (am i exaggerating)

As much fun as it might be to contemplate, I'd still leave HP-UX on your HP-9000 servers.

palinux is good, and works on a lot of hardware, but if big money depends on that server then HP-UX is more mature.

One site I think should have been posted to this thread is documentation.

The most popular: redhat, mandrake, SuSe, debian.

Every version have oficial site where you
can download free.

You can check on the sites of every distribution and find programs, also
www.freshrpms.net

Good site www.distrowatch.com will give
a lot info about the linux world

debian is one of the distributions available that has the biggest choice in platforms.

take a look at the main debian website here:

and a list with available architectures is here:
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/

when going with x86 i mostly stick with RH, but for other platforms like sparc and ppc i go the debian way.
