Please help me set my management tools install straight...

Hi guys,

I must admit that I have made a series of assumptions about my ability with Debian and the new HP ProLiant DL360G5 I am building, assumptions that have left me searching far and wide for what is missing in getting the HP tools to work.

I have been reading widely but my knowledge of snmp and other background daemons is limited - I have good linux knowledge but not much in the way of snmpd and device monitoring.

So...

I have the debian tools from HP:

I have installed the i386 versions of each and then tried to ensure that the configuration is complete and necessary agents and so forth in place but when I visit the SMHP I see no useful information.

I have found various how-tos on the web but mostly for older versions of the software and using alien for rpms etc - Does anyone know a step by step that could point me in the right directions.

I can log in but the overall status shows "No items"
File System Space Used - none
Software version informations no details etc

Can some kind soul walk me through some basic diagnostics to see where I have missed a step and where I must focus my learning...

The only other thing I can say is that:

so some are not working probably due to misconfiguration or a missing step.

Shalom Will,

Look at the install script. It has logging options set. In the log should be details as to what failed.

Commonly this would be due to a missing Debian package. .deb

Thank you for your reply and suggestion - it has led to my taking the following notes:

_I am concerned to get this all installed because I have an amber light on one of my 6 disks!_

Now, to try and proceed - I did an apt-get upgrade and noted that

E: The package hp-health needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

so I thought to reinstall hp-health and went about stopping all the init scripts that have been installed:
This was a slow process but may show some useful things to those who know what is going on with these scripts and daemons:

Note that some packages require manual configuration. See the installation notes here:

Specifically the note about running hpsnmpconfig.

Also make sure you have the hp-smh-templates package installed. It is not an i386.deb, but it is required to view all of the snmp agent information in SMH.
