can i run hp_rescan or probe-luns in production??

hi

i need to add a LUN to my existing production server which is running oracle BI and test servers.
when the LUN is shown to the SLES 10 SP1 (x86_64) server from the eva440
can i run /opt/hp/hp_fibreutils/probe-luns as root user without affecting the existing applications?

Yes you can. But sometimes, Linux is not capable to recognize the LUN and a reboot is needed.

are there any changes to be made in any file? are there any parameters to probe-luns?

In fact, you need to run hp_rescan -a. probe-luns is run during startup.

can you please let me know if running hp_rescan will affect existing mountpoints. can i run it without affecting the running application.
hp_rescan -a

where sud the
probe-luns
command be placed? in the boot.local?
what are the parameters. i am unable to find any good docs on the same.
can u plz help me with that too?

Hello,
check this page http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ and try Rescan SCSI bus script, I think it worked in our case (RH + Eva6000) but not sure. Let us know.

Yes, you can run without affecting existing mount points.

I've never had a problem with it. In fact, one of my pre-certification tests for large ssytems is to run it in a loop for an hour.

i will get a chance to do this on sunday or early nxt week ... stor admin went missing tdy ...
btw once i run
hp_rescan -a
will i need to do more for multipathing? my server has two FC cards?

once you run the fibreutils then run multipath command

if you use nice-names then edit the /etc/multipath.conf file and run multipath again.

well,
i never got a chance to do this till now. storage fellow keeps asking me to manage with existing stuff and keeping moving tarring unwanted stuff.
but sooner or later i will do it.

by the following sentence:
once you run the fibreutils then run multipath command

if i understood correctly:

i should run

1. hp_rescan -a
this should be the first step. i hope this wont affect the existing storage mappings
2. multipath -d
this will do a dry run.
how do I know this is dry run is correct. what should i see in the output
3. multipath ?? whats this command?
