What are the differences between Novell's Suse and Red Hat linux? Which has an advantage, infrastructure-wise, stability, security, performance, etc..... ?

on the internet you will find lot of blog's, they vill provide some differences pron/cons,

You will get people on both sides.

Its like asking about religious differences.

The bottom line is the applications you want to use on the OS. Some apps only support suse some support only Redhat. Some apps prefer Suse others prefer redhat.

The apps need to define your choice.

Most of the basic features of the OS web server, compilers, dev tools, oracle support will be the same.

hi,

if you like use sendmail, i would use some free distribution o Linux, ( debian / CentOS .... ), i'm a big fan from *BSD systems, so in my case i would prefer FreeBSD/OpenBSD for a mail gateway.

but in your case, its better to prefer the OS that you mostly using, and you have the most knowledge for administration.

True.

stability/reliability/performance wise both are same.

but management/administration wise, SUSE is better/easier then Red Hat.

YAST is an excellent tool that can manage/configure/administer your SUSE systems in GUI and as well as in CLI environments.
esp YAST's Software Package Management in SUSE is far much better and easier.

rpms such as 'orarun'(An Environment for Running Oracle Products) and 'sapinit'(Kernel Parameter Initializiation for SAP Systems) are out-of-the-box(supported)
a lot many manual configurations required to install oracle and SAP are done via those rpms

rpms for drbd(over lan mirroring) is also supported and comes out-of-the-box.

Platform
SUSE could be install on a low end machine or on high end machine(unlimited sockets)

Red Hat has two platforms one for small machines(Red Hat Enterprise Linux) supports only 2 sockets and the other one is for high end machines(Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform) supports unlimited sockets.

cost/license
24x7 support of SUSE with High Availability Extensions(Clustering Suite) cost US $2300

24x7 support of Redhat Advanced cost US $2500

there might be several reasons, but I think following are most prominent
1, because Red Hat is the first linux distro
2, SUSE was a small German community, and back in 2003/2004 SUSE was acquired by Novell, so Ecosystem, and ISV/IHV certifications starts after Novell acquisitions.

Novell has more than 2,500 ISV certified to run on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and 10, Novell's two most recent releases prior to release 11. Novell's ISV application catalog for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is growing at almost 10% a year.
Red Hat has 2,300 ISV applications certified for RHEL 4, 5, its two most recent releases, less than Novell for its last two releases. Red Hat is growing its ISV application catalog at a rate of 1.25% annually

Shalom,

I'm an RHCE. I like Red hat a lot, and it has many strengths.

RH has a maddening habit however of doing poor Quality Assurance, especially on their cluster releases.

I've played with suse recreationally and find it has a lot in common with Red Hat. It also has a different set of strenghts.

So the right tool for the right job.

Red Hat has the market share, the installed base and a great program to certify good Engineers. I think that is a significant advantage over all other providers.

About the only time I see Red Hat mention SUSE is to refer
to benchmarks or statitics that Red Hat wants to use but
didn't have anything using their own OS.

The bigger question is why are there no Red Hat stories about
successful migrations from Windows? And no comparative doc
against Windows? Weird. Novell has the reputation of
being the Microsoft lover... but to me, it looks the other
way around.

Maybe it's just me. But don't Red Hat success stories that don't involve MS count.
