Doubts about passwd file, chown and sam

Hi,

I have created a user profile in the passwd file manually and the directory of that user. Why I got the owner equal to the UID for the directory and files. I can't change the owner to the login name. In sam, it comppliants that there is no such user.

System: HPUX, N-class, OS 11.00

Hi there.
This is just the point, why you should use the adduser or SAM user definition. These programs keep an overview of all users. Do yourself a favour.
Delete that line from the /etc/passwd adn create the user with SAM. That is the easiest way and the least painful.

First of all your message is in wrong forums.

Are you using NIS? (if you are using nis you have to edit /etc/passwd file on server)
what happens when you type "id username"

Hi Loeng,

That seems that your entry in /etc/passwd containing errors and the system is not able to handle the entry correspending to that new user.
Try to respect the syntax for manuelly changing the /etc/passwd.

May you please giving us this entry ? this would be useful.

Hi,

Run /usr/sbin/pwck. This will tell you if there's anything wrong with the password file's format.
