HP QuickSpecs usually offer the sort of in-depth information you need:

http://www.hp.com/go/quickspecs

In particular, the QuickSpecs for HP-6735s for EMEA zone:
http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13064_emea/13064_emea.HTML

And for HP 8510p:
http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12713_emea/12713_emea.HTML

Look at the sub-heading "Wireless Devices". There seems to be several possible choices for each laptop model, basically Broadcom and Intel chipsets.

I could not find a QuickSpecs document for the Pavillions, but I found the "Maintenance and Service Guide" for the whole Pavillion dv5-1000 series:

http://bizsupport.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01550108/c01550108.pdf

By cross-referencing the Chapter 1 (Product Description) of this document to what I can find by searching on the HP Business Support Center, I think I can partially identify the chipsets:

The dv5-1030eg has "pre-n" WLAN support and an AMD CPU, so the WLAN chipset will apparently be either Atheros AR9280 or Broadcom 4321.

The dv5-1050eg cannot be found at all in the Business Support Center.

The dv5-1110eg has only b/g WLAN and it has an AMD CPU, so the WLAN chipset must be Atheros AR2425.

MK

I'm thinking of purchasing an HP laptop but I need to know what wireless chipset (such as device ID and vendor ID) before purchasing, so I can research the available Linux drivers and ensure easy compatibility with Linux.

Please, could you advice as to what chipset is in the following model laptops:
* HP Pavilion dv5-1030eg
* HP Pavilion dv5-1050eg
* HP Pavilion dv5-1110eg
* HP-6735s
* HP 8510p

Thank you.

Thanks for the link. Thankyou for the quick response. Thankyou for your time.

As a note, I did spend a LOT of time surfing on this, BEFORE my initial post, and I have already been thru those pages you provided.

All they say for the wireless is:
Integrated 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN

Its simply impossible for me to deduce the chipset from that.

There are probably more than 1/2 dozen different integrated wireless devices that could be in this laptop, all of which would require a different driver, and they may or may not be supported by Linux.

For example:
* intel 1397
* intel 4965
* intel 5100
* intel 5300
* various realtek (of different models)
* various atheros (of different AR models)

Please, I really, really DO appreciate the fast response, but those specification pages are still too general. I need something more specific.

Please, can anyone advise as to the wireless chipset in the models I noted in my first post?
