DL 580 G5 not booting on 2.6.9-78.0.5.ELsmp

I have a new DL 580 G5 w/ 2 dual core processors running RH 4.5 AS. It was running fine on the 2.6.9-67 Kernel, but after the .78.0.1 and 78.0.5 updates it refuses to boot. I can boot it with the *.67 kernel. RH had me delete the .78 and try to download and install it again, but I did not pull the smp version.
"up2date -uf kernel-smp"
The system then annouces everything is up to date, but there are no new kernels in the /boot dir.

Have you edit the grub.conf to reflect the changes you made to your kernel?

send us the boot logs if possible.

At this point I have Red hat really scratching their heads.

I am considering reinstalling the box from scratch because this makes no sense at all.

what errors did you get on boot with the 78 kernel?

instead of using up2date, download and install the kernels manually to confirm. update grub.conf, and boot.
