Thank you Sir for your prompt reply

I do use the HP bios feature .
embedded SATA RAID
and 2 hard disk provided by HP.

So it is not a external controller .

So it is possible to do the hardware RAID1 with debian etch stable or lenny or not ?

If yes do you have a link ?

I Tried http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid

Debian detect the RAId , but I have segmentation error ..

what hardware is actually in the box
of HP embedded RAID ?

thank you

Francois BIGOT
fbigot@ier.com.sg

i guys, after a few days of problems I will try to find my luck here with you..

well, I have a Hp Proliant ML110 G4 Server with 2 x 250gb SATA discs (same) where I want to install debian etch

Installation is not a problem if I install straight without and RAID, and also software RAID is working but.. I want Hardware RAID..

And it looks good until I have to choose the disks where I want to install, it shows 2 disks
sda and sdb... It should show just 1 disk when have created the array (RAID1 - mirroring)

Why I want to make hardware RAID work is because if one hdd should crash I would like to replace the disk and reboot the system without errors...
Are there any experts in this area that can help me install the RAID1 on a HP proliant ml110 G4?

Or is it just not possible to install the hardware RAID1??
See http://linux-ata.org/faq-sata-raid.html

I tried also debian lenny with dmraid without sucess ...

help please , can I have a step by step procedure guide.

b.rgds

Francois BIGOT
fbigot@ier.com.sg

Shalom,

The way it is supposed to work is you set up the hardware raid on the system bios, if you system shipped with it. Then you do an OS install on what appears to the system to be one disk.

If you are working with an add in RAID card, then you have become a victim, as I have of the fact that most of the inexpensive hardware raid cards don't work with Linux.

The only way Raid 1 will work is if your system shipped with a raid card from the factory. I know of no after market product that works properly with Linux.

SEP

You will not be able to install Debian on this system and use the embedded controller in RAID mode. This controller can best be described as software raid done with the driver. The driver needed is adpahci which is only offered for RHEL and SLES. Without the adpahci driver you will see 2 single drives.

Options are

1) Uses RHEL (Centos) or SLES

2) leave the drives JBOD, and use software mirroring in Linux

3) Install a Smart Array RAID controller. the cciss driver for the Smart Array controller is already in the Debian kernel
