Turning Linux To Xterminal

Hi all,
I'm trying to convert an old pc to an Xterminal.
RedHat 9 is installed.
on INIT 3 , I type :
X -query < ip of xdm running machine > ( soaris or HP ).
ALl I get is the regular X screen ( blank with mouse pointer )
It doesn't even work from Linux to Linux ,
I treid: exporting DISPLAY, changing fonts on the hosts machines , xhost + .

I thing what you are looking for is xdm, the best is to read the xdm man page then if you still have problems let us know..

You want to change the Xserver and Xaccess files:
/etc/X11/xdm
man xdm for details on the configuration you'll need to setup. A man Xserver in the XDMCP section will help too.

A google search will should also provide lots of examples: ie:

I know this is a bit late in the day but I have just reply to an entry about xterm and it reminded me of your question !

I am not sure if this is appropiate or not, but I am also trying to get an XDM login using Linux (client requesting xdm login) and Linux (server, serving xdm login). I am getting a black screen with just the mouse, here's the output from X:
